THE LITTLE DANCER
COCA'S BALLET ECLECTICA
Presents
THE LITTLE DANCER-TRAVELS THROUGH
TIME

Sponsored by Mary Strauss

In August of 2005, Ballet Eclectica was
formed as COCA's student ballet company. In
this relatively short time, it has gained
prominence and respect in the St. Louis
dance community and Ballet Eclectica has
performed throughout the city. The repertoire
of Ballet Eclectica incorporates elements of
classical and contemporary ballet, modern
dance, and culturally influenced dances. In
2006, Ballet Eclectica collaborated with the
Saint Louis Art Museum to create and
present The Little Dancer, an original story
inspired by the museum's beloved Degas
sculpture.

The story revolves around the Degas's young
model, who dreams of becoming a famous
ballerina. Each year, the ballet changes to
incorporate new artwork, choreography and
costumes. Laurence Galian was
commissioned by COCA to create an overture
for The Little Dancer, as well as music for the
scenes between the character of the Little
Dancer and the Artist, and finally to compose
music for the finale solo dance of the Little
Dancer.
